In summer the seaside is just a few hours from Bucharest — if you catch the right departure window. With a car you have the freedom to hop from one resort to another, from the crowds of Mamaia to the wild beaches up north. Here is what to know about the road, the tolls and, above all, parking.
The road: A2, the Sun Motorway
Bucharest–Constanța is ~225 km on the A2, about 2.5–3 hours off-peak. The motorway is good and fast, but it jams badly on summer Friday afternoons heading out and Sunday evenings coming back. To reach the southern coast (Neptun, Mangalia, Vama Veche) without entering Constanța, use the bypass and the A4.
The bridge toll, separate from the vignette
On the A2 you cross the Danube on the Fetești–Cernavodă bridges, and here you pay a bridge toll: 19 lei for a car, each crossing (so 38 lei round trip). It is a charge separate from the vignette — you need both. You pay by SMS to 7577, online or at petrol stations, no later than 24:00 the next day.
Where to park (the hard part)
- Mamaia is a parking nightmare in July–August. If you are staying a few days, choose accommodation with parking included and leave the car there — you move along the strip more easily on foot or by scooter.
- Vama Veche and 2 Mai have limited parking; arrive early or park a bit further out and walk.
- Constanța (the Peninsula, the old town) is beautiful but hard to park in — look for the paid car parks in the area.
The resorts, in brief
- Vama Veche / 2 Mai — relaxed, bohemian, young.
- Mangalia, Saturn–Venus–Jupiter–Neptun–Olimp — families, hotels, tidy beaches.
- Eforie North/South — classic, close to Constanța.
- Mamaia — the liveliest, clubs, wide beaches.
- Corbu and the north — wild, undeveloped beaches.
With a car you can sleep in a quiet resort and go out in another in the evening — the combination that makes the difference from being stuck in a single spot.
When to leave
The golden rule of the coast: avoid the peaks. The ideal departure is very early (before 7:00) or, if you can, Tuesday–Thursday instead of the weekend. The Sunday-evening return is the slowest window. A useful sum: the round trip is ~450 km, roughly 250–300 lei of fuel, plus 38 lei of bridge toll.
